Top Rank promoter Bob Arum will travel to the Philippines on Sunday and meet next week with Manny Pacquiao to present him with four potential opponents to pick from for his next fight, which will take place in May or June.

You can cross Floyd Mayweather Jr. off the list because Mayweather is going to jail and won't be available to fight. Even if he gets out early for good behavior in mid-March -- no guarantee -- forget about the big fight in the first half of this year. So Arum's list is down to a fourth fight with Juan Manuel Marquez (who lost a controversial decision to Pacquiao in November), Miguel Cotto for a rematch or a match with one of the junior welterweight titleholders, Lamont Peterson or Timothy Bradley Jr.

Now, I'm not saying those are my four preferred opponents, because I'd love to see Pacquiao fight, say, Canelo Alvarez or James Kirkland or Marcos Maidana or Andre Berto or Victor Ortiz or Sergio Martinez.

However, one of the guys on Arum's list is getting the fight, so here is my order of preference of those four. If you don't agree, fine. Make your own list.

Round 1 - A feel out round but Povetkin with the upper hand. Povetkin getting more aggressive towards the end of the round but Boswell very efficient.

Round 2 - Boswell doing just enough to lose. Povetkin more efficient and more lively. Throwing combos whereas Boswell is not.

Round 8 - Povetkin obviously in control but now hunting for the stoppage. left hook, 7-10 punch combination with an overhand right that drops Boswell. Bell cannot save the fighter...10 count, Boswell can't get up in time. Povetkin wins by 8 round knockout and retains WBA title and improves to 23-0 (16)

Guillermo Jones - lost cause?

Guillermo Jones

I used to think Guillermo Jones was one of those amazing boxers whose career was crippled due to activity related to injuries and managerial/contractual problems. Jones won the WBA Cruiserweight title in September of 2008 and has only fought and defended his title twice since then against weak opposition.I'm starting to wonder if his talents have been wasted over the years and now has gotten used to being mediocre. Dan Raphael of ESPN put it best in his "division-by-division rankings"

8. Guillermo Jones (38-3-2)
On Nov. 5, the chronically inactive Jones fought for just the third time since September 2008, making his second title defense. It was a mismatch, as expected, as Jones beat up on unqualified challenger Mike Marrone before stopping him in the sixth round. This was garbage.

Jones has a record of 38-3-2 (30) but has only fought 15 times in 12 years. More specifically, he did not fight in years 2003, 2006 and 2009.

At 39, he may as well just retire. No one will notice anyway.

I understand there are few household names in boxing right now but there are quite a number of elite fighters that do not get much press outside of the ever dwindling boxing community. Humberto Soto is one of them and his split from Top Rank is huge.

Not only is Soto leaving Top Rank who is strongly affiliated with HBO, but he'll be joining Pacquiao-Mosley on Showtime.

Ok, my sincerest apologies. After a series of non-threatening lingering illnesses, my hiatus ends today!

There is a lot of boxing going on. Boxing is making a huge comeback. The "average" fan hasn't caught on yet but don't expect them to. You can't ruin a sport with over priced unworthy pay per view fights for almost two decades and expect the sport to be fixed in just a couple years.

As always, one step forward is usually followed by two steps back. While there are lots of great fights being televised for free thanks to Shobox, TeleFutura, Telemundo, Friday Night Fights and the occasional HBO shows; there is tons of great exposure just about every week. That is the one step forward. The two steps back we continue (and will probably never go away) to see is the politics (i.e. dealing with Pacquiao-Mosley instead of Pacquiao-Marquez 3 or Khan-Prescott 2), bogus titles (i.e. The WBC Silver belt or anything having to do with the WBC) and last but not least: Evander Holyfield.

2011 has already offered multiple fan friendly fights already, so here is to a great rest of 2011!

Its a can't wait fight. As the fan watching from home, glad its going to be in Canada again, their boxing fan base has a stronger following and much more electric crowd.

Not really sure if Hopkins was robbed, but the possibility of a Pascal home cooking makes it that much harder to believe Hopkins will come out on top if it goes to the score cards. Considering Hopkins hasn't stopped anyone since his beautiful body shot KO of Oscar de la Hoya back in 2004...it probably will go to the judges...

11 years ago today, Arturo "Thunder" Gatti knocked out Joey Gamache in one of the most brutal knockouts I have ever seen.

A quick recap, Gatti walked in with a record of 30-4 (25) in only his second fight during his comeback from a string of three consecutive losses. Gamache, 55-3 (38) and 34 years of age was at the end of his career which included WBA championships at super featherweight and lightweight.

The big thing surrounding this fight was weight. The contract weight was junior welterweight (140 lbs.) which both fighters made - Gamache 140 and Gatti 140.5. In just 24 hours Gatti rehydrated himself and gained 19 pounds over night!

Anyway, Gatti always gave us exciting fights and this one wasn't any different.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. stays undefeated, just like Papa!

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. won a 10 round decision over Billy Lyell in what has become a warm up for a WBC Middleweight title shot against paper champion Sebastian Zbik in May. Chavez Jr. improves to 42-0-1 (30) while Lyell falls to 22-9.

Dan Rafael of ESPN states:

Rafael's remark: Few outside of Mexico take Chavez, 24, all that seriously, but they sure love him in Mexico. He drew about 12,000 fans to a soccer stadium in his hometown, where he had not fought since 2006. The son of the legend only fought once last year, a decision against John Duddy, and pulled out of a December pay-per-view headline fight because of supposed illness. If Chavez, who has been matched extremely soft for most of his career, is to be taken seriously 2011 figures to be an important year for him.

Unfortunately for Junior, his career will be compared to that of his fathers. I don't really think we are focusing on what matters here. First and foremost, sons of former greats usually never amount to anything. The most recent disappointment was Hector Camacho Jr. now approaching the end of his career, Camacho Jr has had approximately 60 professional fights and the only fighters worth mentioning he lost to.

Here we have Chavez Jr, a 24 year old in his 7th year as a pro, still undefeated and due for his first title shot in a few months. What more could we ask of him? Chavez Sr is a Hall of Fame fighter, a once in a lifetime type of boxer. Undefeated in his first 90 professional bouts and retired with a tremendous 30+ title fights. We can't expect anyone to come close to that!

Yes, it is time for Chavez Jr to step it up but as long as he doesn't pull out of his May title fight or lose, he's doing ok in my book.

Another reason why Pacquiao and Cotto leaving HBO is good for boxing: level playing field. HBO has had such a strong grip that all the good fights have been overlooked because HBO insists on making everything pay per view. If you're a die hard boxing fan you know that there is a LOT of fight shows, especially in the past year. Hopefully with Pac Man going to Showtime and getting CBS attention, we'll gain the average viewership as well.

Here is what's great about this situation; Breidis Prescott wasn't the one who started all of this. The public and the boxing media did...this is a real public demand!
